The I Ching, Ancient Consciousness, and the Creation of Chinese Medicine
A Course Created by Jessie Shaw, MSOM
This beautifully rendered film lecture with supporting reading materials tells the story of how Chinese medicine came into being, and the states of consciousness that propelled it forward. The development of Chinese medicine is explored through an in-depth look at the I Ching - The Book of Changes, a revered classical text compiled over the span of 600 years. Tracing the life of the I Ching enables the course to examine the intellectual antecedents (i.e., yin-yang and five phases theories) that were identified by ancient cosmologers, then developed by the diviners, and ultimately applied to the body and meridian system by physicians. The I Ching's long lifespan and composite nature also render the consciousness states that brought it and Chinese medicine to life transparent.
